May 28, 2019·We did it. We got The Treasury to promise they’d axe the sexist tax on tampons, sanitary pads, and mooncups. But, sadly, 3 years on, nothing has happened. Sanitary products are still seen as a “luxury” item, and are currently taxed at 5% in the UK, with this percentage being subject to five different rates since 1973.

Why? Because if they didn’t it would be much harder to leave the house, go to school or work, meet up with friends. Despite the necessity of menstrual products, in the UK and many other countries, menstrual pads, panty liners and tampons are taxed as “non-essential” items. N.B: definition of non-essential is not absolutely necessary.
The Treasury vowed to axe the outdated and overtly sexist tax on tampons, sanitary pads and mooncups in January 2016. WE WON! By March we made history when Parliament accepted a tampon-tax-ending amendment proposed by the amazing Paula Sherriff MP. Following Brexit complications, this amendment will be implemented by 2022 at the very latest.
